Coats Land

Coats Land within the British claim to Antarctica

Coats Land is a region in Antarctica located within the sector of land belonging to the British Antarctic Territory (along with Queen Elizabeth Land), westward of Queen Maud Land, and forms the eastern shore of the Weddell Sea, extending in a general northeast-southwest direction between 20º00´W and 36º00´W.

Discovery and name

The northeast part was discovered from the Scotia by William S. Bruce, leader of the Scottish National Antarctic Expedition, 1902-04. He gave the name Coats Land for Sir James Coats, 1st Baronet, Jr., and Major Andrew Coats, the two chief supporters of the expedition. As part of the British territory, it lies adjacent to Westarctica (though it does not share a border).
