Map showing the location of Moore Barony and Farmer Island

Morris Island, known in Westarctica as Moore Barony is an ice-covered island about 13 kilometers long, lying 9 kilometers west of Farmer Island in the Marshall Archipelago.

Discovery and name

It was mapped by the United States Geological Survey from surveys and U.S. Navy air photos taken during the years 1959–65. Morris Island was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names in honor of Lieutenant J.E. Morris, U.S. Navy Reserve, who served aboard the USS Glacier in the Ross Sea during the 1961–62 research season.

Peerage title

On 25 September 2015, Vicente Bicudo de Castro was granted the peerage title Count of Moore, with authority over the Moore Dome. At this time, the name of Morris Island was changed by Grand Duke Travis to "Moore Barony" and was also granted as a personal gift to the Count.
