Pranke Island (73°14′S 124°55′W) is a small ice-covered island lying close to Siple Island in the west extremity of Russell Bay, off the coast of Westarctica.
Discovery and name
The island was mapped by the United States Geological Survey from ground surveys and U.S. Navy air photos, 1959-65. Pranke Island was named for James B. Pranke, an aurora researcher at Byrd Station in 1965.
Pranke Island Coin
In 2011, the Central Bank of Westarctica minted bronze and bi-metallic $10 Westarctican Dollars Coins for Pranke Island. The mintage was 300 and they are especially unique due to their diamond (or square) shape, as opposed to the traditional round shape for a coin.
