'''Westarctica.com''' is the domain name of the realm of administrative autonomy, authority and control within the Internet operated by the government of the [[micronation]] of [[Westarctica]]. For eleven years prior to 2018 the name had been claimed by a domain parking service. A domain parking service is a method by which an individual or organization reserves one or more domain names solely for the purpose of preventing their use by others, forcing such others to either pay for the name to be released or causing them to wait until the service's claim on the name expires for non-payment. The domain name of Westarctica had been parked and was unusable as a domain until 3 March of 2018.

Westarctica.com and Westarctica.info are the domain names used by the government of Westarctica for all official business.

Westarctica's internet presence

During the early days of the Achaean Territory in 2001, the domain name Achaea.org was utilized along with a very basic website created on the old Geocities platform. The username utilized on Yahoo! for ownership purposes was achaeanterritory. Toward the end of 2003, an e-mail account for Achaea.org was acquired and routed through the Yahoo! mail account.

Westarctica.com

When the Achaean Territory was disbanded, Grand Duke Travis created the domain name Westarctica.com for the nation's new website. The site was still run through Geocities, but a more robust e-mail system was put into place that allowed for multiple users with the Westarctica branding.

In 2005, the Duke of Ravencroft was appointed Minister of Information and took over responsibility for design and maintenance of the official government website. He migrated the relevant data to a separate server and created an entirely new site which served as the primary public face of Westarctica until 2007.

Loss of Westarctica.com

In mid-2007, Travis' successor on the throne, Grand Duke Philip underwent a series of medical and financial struggles that resulted in his inability to maintain the Westarctica website any further. Payment for the domain name lapsed and on 13 September 2007 at 18:03 UTC, a domain parking service wrested control of Westarctica.com from the government.

This tragic loss of the official website resulted in numerous micronationalists declaring Westarctica's government dead and its claim to Marie Byrd Land no longer valid. Seemingly overnight, hordes of restless micronations crawled out of the woodwork to fight over the scraps of Westarctica's seemingly abandoned claim to its sovereign territory. These events directly led to the Siple War.

Westarctica.org

When Grand Duke Jon-Lawrence assumed the throne in 2008, he found the holder of Westarctica.com was unwilling to negotiate on a reasonable price for the domain name. To combat the issue, he purchased Westarctica.org instead and established a brand new website under that domain.

The domain name of Westarctica had been parked and was unusable as a domain until 3 March of 2018.
