==Discovery and name==
The United States Geological Survey mapped the islands based on its own surveys and aerial photographs taken by the [[United States Navy]] between 1960 and 1966. The Advisory Committee on [[Antarctic]] Names named the Early Islands in 1970 in honor of the American biologist Tommy Joe Early of Ohio State University, who worked in [[Ellsworth Land]] during the 1968 and 1969 research seasons.
