==Discovery and name==
The mountain was discovered on aerial flights from West Base of the United States Antarctic Service that were conducted during the years 1939–41. Mount Spencer was named in honor of Herbert R. Spencer of Erie, Pennsylvania, the Sea Scout commander of [[Paul A. Siple]], leader of the West Base party of that expedition.
