The knoll was mapped by the United States Geological Survey from surveys and U.S. Navy air photos taken from 1958–61. Fowler Knoll was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names in honor of Chief Warrant Officer George W. Fowler, US Army, who served as a navigator on the 700 nautical miles (1,300 km) tractor traverse from Byrd Station to the South Pole Station from 8 December 1960 to 11 January 1961. The tractor party, led by Major Antero Havola, passed a few miles northward of this knoll on 25 December 1960.

Peerage title

On 26 October 2019, the peerage title Baron of Fowler was bestowed upon Russell Fowler as a gift from his son Callum.
