Heraldry in Kolios is the application of the traditions of personal arms in the culture of the Protectorate of Kolios, to include its titles, orders, and other honorifics.

History

Koliosian heraldry has existed as long as the nation itself. In the early days, there was no specific guidance for Koliosian arms, although there were obvious Germanic and Bavarian influences.

During these early years, the only coats of arms belonged to geographic regions of Kolios, not to individuals.

Efforts to Build Unique Culture of Heraldry

In 2020, Margrave Jordan of Sulli was named to the unnofficial post of Chief Heraldist for the entire Empire of Agber by Empress Arlene, who was also the Princess of Kolios. During his tenure in the role, he expressed interest in developing a system of personal arms for Koliosian nobles. Although Princess Arlene agreed with it being a good idea, she never implemented it.

In 2022, when Prince Garibald assumed the throne, he released an edict that established the framework for Koliosian arms. The Prince von Kolios retained the right to award and manage Koliosian heraldry after the signing of the Marana Accords. He also established the office of Fryar King of Arms, although the role has not yet been filled.

Guidelines for Koliosian Heraldry

As Koliosian tradition is forming, there are a small number of firm rules outside of the fact that the Sovereign or their designated representative must approve all arms prior to registry. For example:

  • Entitlement to arms is given to all members of the Nobility of Kolios While any Koliosian without such an entitlement may request arms, or the registration of independently created arms, the approval of such requests will be made on a case-by-case basis. This may require amendments to components prior to approval. Anyone submitting arms (or components of arms) who is not entitled to them may be denied registry.
  • The "Rule of Tincture" is a guideline codified by some registries, and dates back centuries. This observance suggests that colors should not be placed upon colors, metals not upon other metals, etc. This guidance is considered binding in the Koliosian tradition. It is commonly regarded that observance of the Rule of Tincture leads to more aesthetically appealing coats of arms.
  • The use of helms is limited to those Koliosian citizens who are not entitled to the use of a coronet.
  • Supporters are limited to those named to the Nobility ranks Prince and Duke. Likewise, Knights Commander of the Most Honorable Order of Kolios are entitled to them, as an achievement, regardless of rank. There other positions that may be entitled to the use of supporters. The roles and guidelines governing which are up to the Prince von Kolios.
  • Marshalling or the combined appearance of arms is not permitted in newly created arms, except in cases where a clear reasoning is approved by the Prince von Kolios or their Fryar King of Arms.
  • Crests, Mantling, Torses, Compartments, and Mottos are not an official part of Koliosian heraldry. While there is a chance some of these could be added in the future, Prince Garibald has stated that if added they would have "specific meaning and symbolism within our tradition, and not merely be unnecessary decoration."

Unique Elements of Koliosian Heraldry

While in its infancy, there have been a number of elements identified or created for use in Koliosian heraldry. These include:

Specific Devices and Achievements

These have been developed for use by individuals who meet specific criteria. There are fairly specific guidelines for the design and display of these elements.

Color Palette

The approved tinctures for use in Koliosian arms

Kolios employs a fairly robust, but strictly enforced color palette.

There are special rules covering the use of Ferrum and Cendree, as they're essentially just gradations of gray. Only one of the two should be used in a grant of arms, and neither should be utilized if the arms use Sable (black) or Argent (white/silver).

Heraldic Components

Heraldic components should show preference to Germanic elements and tradition.
