Mathis Nunataks

The Mathis Nunataks (77°8′S 143°27′W) are an isolated cluster of nunataks near the head of Arthur Glacier, 8 nautical miles (15 km) east-southeast of Mount Warner, in the Ford Ranges.

Discovery and name

The nunataks were mapped by the United States Antarctic Service during the years 1939–41, and further mapped by the United States Geological Survey from surveys and U.S. Navy air photos taken over the years 1959–65. The group of nunataks were named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names in honor of Terry R. Mathis, a traverse engineer who served with the Byrd Station glaciological strain network during the 1967–68 research season, and also as station engineer with the Byrd Station winter party in 1968.
