The point was mapped by the United States Geological Survey from surveys and [[U.S. Navy]] aerial photographs collected during the years 1959–66. Merrick Point was named by the Advisory Committee on [[Antarctic]] Names in 1977 after Dale Merrick of Stanford University. Merrick was an upper atmosphere researcher and Station Scientific Leader at [[Siple Station]] during the over-winter of the 1975 season.
