Flag of Wirtland

Wirtland is an internet-based micronation founded in 2008.

Activities

From its founding, Wirtland has been a darling of the international media, with many news articles being released about its unusual status as a virtual country. The concept of non-territorial statehood had long been established in the micronational community, with early visionaries such as Empire of Atlantium professing to unite its citizens without the need for borders or physical territory.

The government of Wirtland has done nothing of significance aside from issuing a coin and gathering thousands of virtual citizens.

Coins

In 2009, Wirtland released its first gold coin, the "Wirtland Crane" (10 International Currency Units, ICU). The Wirtland Crane – a 1/10 oz. coin minted in 24 carat gold - became the world's first gold coin produced by an internet-based (virtual) country. The gold "Crane" was soon followed by the first silver coin, similarly titled the "Silver Crane" (2 ICU).

Attempted acquisition by Westarctica

In 2019, the ruler of Wirtland announced his intention to put the country up for auction on eBay. In response, Grand Duke Travis initiated a conversation with their government to learn more about the possibility of acquiring Wirtland as a colony of Westarctica.

Over the course of several days, the Grand Duke performed a due diligence assessment of Wirtland's assets in an attempt to assign a fair market value to the micronation. During this period, the citizens of Wirtland entered open revolt at the mention of their personal citizenship data being acquired by an outside party. The government quickly removed citizenship data from the terms of the sale, thereby drastically reducing any value to a potential buyer.

With no tangible assets, no mailing list, and no citizens, the only things that would be included with the auction would have been the Wirtland domain name and "brand name," despite the name Wirtland not being officially registered as a trademark in any country. Grand Duke Travis made an offer of $300 to purchase Wirtland on 7 April 2019. This offer was immediately rejected by the ruler of Wirtland, who claimed to have many offers that were "several times" higher. However, as of March 2022, the micronation is still available for sale on eBay with an asking price of $50,000.
