Discovery and name
The rock and surrounding area were mapped by USGS from surveys and United States Navy air photos collected during the years 1959–66. Nicholson Rock was named by Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names in honor of Charles E. Nicholson, CE2, United States Navy, who served as a Construction Electrician at the South Pole Station in 1974.
