The naming of Strauss Glacier was proposed to Advisory Committee on [[Antarctic]] Names by Admiral [[Richard E. Byrd]]. It was named in honor of Lewis Strauss, Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission from 1953–58. Strauss was a longtime friend and advisor to Admiral Byrd who recommended that Antarctica be used to demonstrate peaceful employment of atomic energy.
