The mountain was discovered in 1929 by the Byrd Antarctic Expedition. Mount Iphigene was named by Admiral [[Richard E. Byrd]] for Iphigene Ochs Sulzberger, daughter of Adolph Ochs and wife of Arthur Sulzberger, patrons of the expedition.
