The knoll was mapped by the United States Geological Survey from surveys and [[U.S. Navy]] air photos taken from 1958–61. Fowler Knoll was named by the Advisory Committee on [[Antarctic]] Names in honor of Chief Warrant Officer George W. Fowler, US Army, who served as a navigator on the 700 nautical miles (1,300 km) tractor traverse from [[Byrd Station]] to the [[South Pole]] Station from 8 December 1960 to 11 January 1961. The tractor party, led by Major Antero Havola, passed a few miles northward of this knoll on 25 December 1960.
