History of the title
The title of duke has been in continuous usage since the early days of the Achaean Territory of Antarctica.

Usage in the Achaean Territory
The Achaean Royal Charter had several unusual articles pertaining to dukes. Articles 27-31 of the charter detailed not only how a duke should be addressed, but also what would happen to dukes who no longer held their title though either resignation or being disbarred. This system would have allowed multiple individuals to hold the same title simultaneously while all were still living, with the first being called the 1st Duke and later holders being called by their respective number.

Article 30 of the charter permitted some former dukes to be granted the title of Arch-Duke with a salary provided by the government and advisory responsibilities over their former dukedom.

Usage in Westarctica
When peerage titles were formalized and the structured revised to its present state in 2005, the title of duke became mostly associated with senior ministers of the Grand Ducal Cabinet. This tradition has continued to the present day, as nearly all senior members of the Royal Council bear the title of duke.
