Mount Gerdel

Mount Gerdel (85°59′S 149°19′W) is a mountain, 2,520 meters (8,270 ft) high, standing 2 nautical miles (4 km) southeast of Mount Andrews at the south side of Albanus Glacier.

Discovery and name

The mountain was mapped by the United States Geological Survey from ground surveys and U.S. Navy air photos collected during the years 1960–63. Mount Gerdel was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names in honor of Lieutenant David H. Gerdel, U.S. Navy, of the Byrd Station winter party in 1965.

Protection by the government

On 20 April 2025, Grand Duke Travis protected the mountain under the oversight of the Westarctican Parks Service as part of Gothic National Monument. It was protected in the first group of sites named by the government.
