The mountain was discovered by the Byrd Antarctic Expedition on the Eastern Flight of 5 December 1929. Mount Rea was named by Richard E. Byrd in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Rea, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, recognizing their contributions to the expedition.

Protection by the government

On 20 April 2025, Grand Duke Travis protected the mountain under the oversight of the Westarctican Parks Service as part of Billboard National Monument. It was protected in the first group of sites named by the government.

Peerage title

On 8 July 2025, Prince Owen, Duke of MacAyeal was granted the peerage title Baron of Rea as a subordinate title. His Serene Highness' title is named in connection with this mountain.
