Discovery and name

The nunataks were mapped by USGS from surveys and U.S. Navy air photos collected from 1960–64. Gierloff Nunataks were named by US-ACAN in honor of George B. Gierloff, who worked as a builder with the Byrd Station winter party in 1961.
