The mountain was discovered in 1929 by the Byrd Antarctic Expedition. Mount Iphigene was named by Admiral Richard E. Byrd for Iphigene Ochs Sulzberger, daughter of Adolph Ochs and wife of Arthur Sulzberger, patrons of the expedition.
