Newman Island is an ice-covered island 28 kilometers (15 nmi) long, lying in the Nickerson Ice Shelf on the coast of Westarctica.
Discovery and name
The island was mapped from surveys by the United States Geological Survey and U.S. Navy air photos. Newman Island was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names in honor of Cdr. J.F. Newman, USN, who served as a ships officer on the staff of the Commander, Task Force 43, during Operation Deep Freeze 1966.
