The Stanford Nunatak (76°51′S 143°18′W) is a small, somewhat isolated nunatak located 3.5 nautical miles (6 km) northeast of Mount Morgan in the eastern part of the Gutenko Nunataks of Westarctica.
Discovery and name
The Stanford Nunatak was mapped by United States Geological Survey (USGS) from surveys and U.S. Navy air photos collected during the years 1959-65. Stanford Nunatak was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) in honor of Thomas H. Stanford, an ionospheric physicist at Byrd Station in 1970.
Peerage title
On 28 January 2018, Michael Nagiller was granted the peerage title Baron of Stanford in recognition of his support of Westarctica. His title is named for this feature.
