Discovery and name

It was mapped by the United States Geological Survey from surveys and U.S. Navy trimetrogon photography collected during the years 1958–60. Weiss Ampitheater was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names in honor of Bernard D. Weiss, Meteorologist-in-Charge at Byrd Station during the 1959 research season.

Peerage title

On 16 February 2025, Grand Duke Travis granted the peerage title Baron of Weiss to Hans Jürgen Dohmen, a longstanding supporter of Westarctica and active member in the Citizen's of Westarctica Facebook group.
