Mount Palmer is an ice-covered mountain, visible from the seaward side of Thurston Island. It surmounts the north end of Noville Peninsula and is part of the Walker Mountains.
Discovery and name
The mountain was delineated from aerial photographs taken by U.S. Navy Operation Highjump in December 1946. Mount Palmer was named in honor of James Troxall Palmer, acting surgeon on the ship Relief and later on the sloop of war Peacock under Charles Wilkes from 1838-42. After his Antarctic service, Palmer later became Surgeon-General of the Navy.
