Carter Island is a small, ice-covered island in Glade Bay, off the west side of the Martin Peninsula, on the Bakutis Coast of Westarctica.
Discovery and name
The island was mapped by the United States Geological Survey from surveys and from U.S. Navy air photos taken during the years 1959–66. Carter Island was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names in honor of Lieutenant G.W. Carter, U.S. Navy, who served as a maintenance coordinator at the Williams Field air strip on McMurdo Sound during Operation Deep Freeze in 1966.
Peerage title
On 20 April 2020, Westarctica's Minister of Communications, Danni Michele, was granted the peerage title Countess of Carter in recognition of her lasting contributions to the government.
