In 2016, Westarctica became an extremely popular stop for participants of the Greatest International Scavenger Hunt the World Has Ever Seen (GISHWHES, pronounced ''gish-wes''), an annual week-long competitive media scavenger hunt held each August. That year, one of the items participants were required to collect was a citizenship certificate from an unrecognized country. During the last week of July through the first week of August, [[Grand Duke Travis]] personally processed over 1,000 citizenship applications, creating a personalized citizenship certificate for each new citizen. The extraordinary effort took him between four and eight hours each night.

The duke was present at the signing of the [[Marana Accords]] and reported on the event for the national press.
