'''MicroCon EU 2023''' was the first European iteration of [[MicroCon]], the premiere [[micronation|intermicronational]] diplomatic event held biennially in North America. The conference was located in Ypres, Belgium from 11 - 13 August 2023. It was jointly hosted by the [[Royal Republic of Ladonia]] and the [[Grand Duchy of Flandrensis]]. It was a companion event to [[MicroCon 2023]], which had taken place in early July in Joliet, Illinois.

When presenting her pitch to host MicroCon 2023, [[Queen Carolyn of Ladonia]] included the idea of jointly hosting a companion event in Europe. It was thought that the MicroCon brand, having become globally recognized as the premiere intermicronational event, would be a good addition to the numerous smaller European micronational meetups already occurring each year. The plan was approved and preparations moved forward.

On 9 April 2015, two days before the main MicroCon event, a large group of the micronational delegates gathered together at the Disneyland theme park in Anaheim, California for a relaxed afternoon of fun and friendship.


The primary organizers of the conference were [[Grand Duke Niels of Flandrensis|Grand Duke Nicholas of Flandrensis]] and the Ladonian Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Yvan Bertjens. Both Nicholas and Yvan are based in Belgium, thus making it easy to facilitate planning and execution of the event.
All dressed in casual wear, the delegates enjoyed riding roller coasters and classic Disney attractions. Commodore Miller of Molossia generously provided dinner for the entire party at the famed Blue Bayou restaurant located in New Orleans Square inside the Pirates of the Caribbean Ride.


On 27 September 2022, Emperor Andrew of the [[Empire of Stomaria]] released a video criticizing the attendees of MicroCon and stating he had no intention of attending MicroCon EU because it's beneath his dignity. His statement was universally condemned by the micronational community and met with widespread ridicule and mockery.

On 10 April 2015, the day before the main conference was scheduled to occur, President Baugh organized a group tour of Hollywood, California. The tour was led by local Los Angeles resident, [[Grand Duke Travis]] and his [[Consorts of Westarctica|royal consort]], [[Prince-Consort Dinny]].


==Pre-conference gatherings==
As a former professional actor and filmmaker, Grand Duke Travis was uniquely suited to lead the tour of Hollywood Boulevard. Also on the tour were [[King Christopher of Vikesland]], [[Prince Arthur of Homestead]], [[Baron Stogner]], Commodore Jonathan Miller and his wife [[Katie Bellis Miller]], in addition to President Baugh and the First Family of Molossia.
On the afternoon of 11 August 2023, delegations began arriving in Ypres. Many delegates met informally at the restaurants in the city square to enjoy a meal and discuss matters of micronational importance. It was also an ideal time to visit the tourist attractions around the city, such as Saint Martin's Cathedral, Ypres City Hall, and the city walls, which date to the reign of King Louis XIV of France.


At 7:30pm, delegates gathered at the Menin Gate, a large triumphal arch in the city's center, to watch the somber Last Post ceremony. This military taps in remembrance of fallen soldiers has been performed by the city of Ypres every day since 1928 with only a brief break during World War II.
The tour group met at the Hollywood and Highland Complex, located centrally in Hollywood and one of the most popular tourist attractions in the world. While visiting the hand-prints outside the Chinese Theater, President Baugh provided a phone interview to a reporter from NPR concerning MicroCon and micronations. After the interview was concluded, the group walked down the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Hollywood Boulevard, interacting with the costumed characters and street vendors while photographer Matt Roth snapped pictures of them in the scenic surroundings.


After the Last Post ceremony had ended, approximately 30 delegates met at the Brasserie Kazematten (Casement Restaurant) located inside the subterranean casements of the city walls. This unique eatery featured a wooden dining table long enough to accommodate the entire party in one sitting place. The most popular beverage of the evening was Kriek Max, a lambic-style cherry beer. Because the drinking age in Belgium is only 16 years, even the younger delegates were able to enjoy the distinctive taste of this Belgian drink.
Then they made their way to the historic Egyptian Theater where Grand Duke Travis explained the history of the majestic location in the outer courtyard of the Egyptian-themed building. Afterward, the group was hungry and decided to dine at the adjacent Pig & Whistle restaurant where they were seated together at a large group table.


With their early morning wake-up call in mind, the delegates departed for the evening to their hotels at around 11:30pm.

==Conference events==
The delegates of the attending nations were invited to set up small displays showcasing items of interest from their countries. The table displays ringed the perimeter of the room in which the conference was held and each display was approximately three feet square.

The main conference occurred at Domein De Lissewal in the city center of Ypres from 9:00am - 5:30pm.


Display tables showing artifacts and information about the attending [[micronation]]s were set up by attendees on the first floor of the venue. They were left in place for the entire duration of the conference and could be viewed by anyone who showed interest in learning more about micronations or alternative states.
After initial opening remarks from the MicroCon founder and organizer, [[President Kevin Baugh]], the conference presentations began with a keynote address via YouTube by Mr. [[Steven Scharff]], noted micronational patriologist, speaking about micronational history and concepts.


On the second floor, a large meeting area served as the primary stage for the presentations. Thirteen presentations of approximately 30 minutes each were given by the delegates. Often, the speakers worked in pairs, each providing a 15-minute segment on a specific topic. Coffee and refreshment breaks were provided at regular intervals to allow for socializing during the information sessions.
Presenters used slides and video to highlight their presentations, and various unique perspectives were shared with the audience. One of the significant moments of the event was a medieval warfare demonstration by the Knights of [[Kingdom of Shiloh|Shiloh]], when the fully armored knights began battling in the midst of the convention.

There were three breaks, including a longer lunch break, during which the delegates socialized and networked. The media was also in attendance, including an affiliate of the Today Show as well as noted micronational photographer [[Matt Roth]]. After four hours, the conference adjourned and the delegates departed, some to their home nations, and others to prepare for the evening's event, the MicronCon Cotillion.


Academics Ffion McEvoy of Sweden and Dr. Sandra Petermann of Germany presented dissertations they had written concerning the phenomena of micronations. Dr. Petermann had previously attended [[MicroCon 2017]] in Atlanta, and was well-acquainted with the delegates and their activities.

In the presentation, His Royal Highness discussed Westarctica's transition from a new country project to a non-profit corporation and encouraged attendees to attach their micronation to a worthy cause.

==MicroCon Cotillion==

The MicroCon Cotillion was a semi-formal ball, arranged as a social event following the convention.
 
Attendees arrived at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Anaheim at 5:30 pm, dressed in their finery for an evening of dining and dancing. After a catered dinner and some dancing, awards were presented by various micronational leaders to their peers and associates. Among the presenters were Grand Duke Travis of Westarctica, King Christopher of Vikesland, King Timothy of Shiloh, Queen Anastasia of Ruritania and Prince Arthur of Homestead.
 
During the catered dinner, Grand Duke Travis began a series of toasts by giving a rousing toast to [[President Kevin Baugh|President Baugh]] in honor of all the hard work he had done to organize the event as well as his longstanding commitment to the betterment of the community of micronations.
 
Following the awards ceremony dancing and socializing continued until the evening wound down and each leader and their party took their leave.

After the conclusion of the main events of the conference, a small group of delegates retreated to the quiet dignity of Downtown Disney where they enjoyed cocktails by a roaring outdoor fireplace at a tiki bar located in the center courtyard of the Disneyland Hotel.
 
While there, they answered questions from many interested passersby, who found themselves drawn to the intriguing uniforms and medals worn by the micronational leaders.

==Diplomatic reception==
After the information sessions were completed, the delegates took a brief break and returned to the first floor for the diplomatic reception. During this time, they exchanged awards and signed treaties with one another.
Prince Jean-Pierre of [[Principality of Aigues-Mortes|Aigues-Mortes]] was also inducted into the [[Micronational Hall of Excellence]] since he was not present in Joliet, Illinois when the 2023 group of inductees received their awards.
The reception lasted for one hour before transitioning into the evening dinner.
==Formal dinner==

A formal dinner capped off the day's activities. Attendees were seated amidst formal place settings and enjoyed a three course meal that included white and red wines from Belgium. Dinner lasted until approximately 11:00pm, when most delegates departed to their hotels for the evening. A hearty few who still had energy visited a fun fair underway in the city square and enjoyed a few drinks before retiring.

The following day, a number of delegates joined an organized tour of landmarks around Ypres. These locations included the site of the Battle of Passchendaele.
A few micronationalists then enjoyed one last meal in the city square before closing out the conference.

One of the significant moments of the event was a medieval warfare demonstration by the Knights of Shiloh, when the fully armored knights began battling in the midst of the convention.

There were three breaks, including a longer lunch break, during which the delegates socialized and networked. The media was also in attendance, including an affiliate of the Today Show as well as noted micronational photographer Matt Roth. After four hours, the conference adjourned and the delegates departed, some to their home nations, and others to prepare for the evening's event, the MicronCon Cotillion.

Westarctica's participation

The delegation from Westarctica included Grand Duke Travis, Prince-Consort Dinny, and Baron Stogner, who was representing both Westarctica and Vikesland. King Christopher of Vikesland attended all events at the side of Westarctica's delegation.

Grand Duke Travis gave the second speech of the conference, entitled But What's the Point - Micronations that Matter. In the presentation, His Royal Highness discussed Westarctica's transition from a new country project to a non-profit corporation and encouraged attendees to attach their micronation to a worthy cause.

Westarctica's display table featured numerous items from both Westarctica and Calsahara.

MicroCon Cotillion

The MicroCon Cotillion was a semi-formal ball, arranged as a social event following the convention.

Attendees arrived at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Anaheim at 5:30 pm, dressed in their finery for an evening of dining and dancing. After a catered dinner and some dancing, awards were presented by various micronational leaders to their peers and associates. Among the presenters were Grand Duke Travis of Westarctica, King Christopher of Vikesland, King Timothy of Shiloh, Queen Anastasia of Ruritania and Prince Arthur of Homestead.

During the catered dinner, Grand Duke Travis began a series of toasts by giving a rousing toast to President Baugh in honor of all the hard work he had done to organize the event as well as his longstanding commitment to the betterment of the community of micronations.

Following the awards ceremony dancing and socializing continued until the evening wound down and each leader and their party took their leave.

After the conclusion of the main events of the conference, a small group of delegates retreated to the quiet dignity of Downtown Disney where they enjoyed cocktails by a roaring outdoor fireplace at a tiki bar located in the center courtyard of the Disneyland Hotel.

While there, they answered questions from many interested passersby, who found themselves drawn to the intriguing uniforms and medals worn by the micronational leaders.
