The three classes of the Order and their corresponding ribbons and medals

The Order of the Snowflake is the highest Order of Westarctica. The intention of the Order is to honor those who have provided a service to Westarctica.

There are three classes of the Order:

  • Knight Grand Cross
  • Knight Commander
  • Knight

Only the Grand Duke himself has the power to bestow new knighthoods and thus far, he has awarded the medal to foreign dignitaries, artists, prominent nobles, and other supporters of Westarctica. All knights receive the medal respective of their class and the award is for life.

The Order is considered a "self-styled" one, with no connection to existing or historical Orders of Chivalry.

Membership in the Order of the Snowflake entitles the bearer to attach the post-nomial "KtS" following their name. In this way, they are living examples of the Westarctican ideal.

Distribution of classes

Initially, the class of Knight was intended to be the most commonly bestowed. However, in 2016, the Grand Duke found a reliable source for high quality regalia and decided to make Knight Commander the primary class of the Order. The class of Knight is still bestowed in certain occasions, but mostly to foreign diplomats where Knight Commander might not be appropriate due to the class of knighthood held by their Head of State.

The class of Knight Grand Cross has always been reserved for Heads of State and members of the Royal Family.
